Obama and the ElectionsQ:
Is Barack Obama the “anti-war candidate?”
A:
Depends on which war you’re talking about.
*Barack
Obama has repeatedly threatened military action against Iran, and
refused to rule out using nuclear weapons. Think about that for a
second: refused to rule out dropping nuclear weapons on civilians.
In a June 2008 speech before the American Israeli Public Affairs
Committee (AIPAC), he said: “I will do everything in my power
to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Everything in my
power to prevent Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon. Everything.” read more

In St. Paul: Republicans Choose War
Criminal, Christian Fascist to Head Ticket; Police Rampage Through the
CityThe Republican National Convention was
an obscene orgy of war mongering, national chauvinism, and patriarchy.
Anyone who thought the nightmare of the Bush years was somehow going
to end through the electoral process, or perhaps that Christian theocrats
had become demoralized and disorganized and were sitting this one out,
was in for the rudest of awakenings.

An extraordinary event took place on
Sunday, August, 24, at the Cleo Parker Robinson Theater in Denver. 300
people gathered to hear speeches by prominent representatives of the
movements against the war, repression, and torture of the Bush Regime.
Insightful and deep analysis, scathing exposure, painful remembrances
of the horrors of this regime and the system in whose interests it acts,
and determined expressions of opposition and calls for the need for
further resistance were Speaking, Sunsara Taylor repeatedly greeted with applause from a rapt
and energetic audience. People in attendance were repeatedly moved to
stand and applaud, to salute and send their love and appreciation to
the speakers, and sometimes to tears. The evening ended with all the
speakers joining Cleo Parker Robinson on stage for a group reading of
the Pledge of Resistance, joined by the audience. |

When I heard that police were raiding
– with guns drawn – the homes and offices of prospective
protesters in St. Paul in anticipation of the RNC, because protesters
were concealing weapons - weapons the police didn’t find because they
don’t exist - my first thought was how very deep into a police state
we now are.
Then I thought, how akin this excuse
is to the WMD hoax justifying the Iraq invasion. “They’re hoarding
weapons of mass destruction! Oh my god! We must crush them before they
get us!”
After which I thought, which part of
this is the bigger story? |

The Republican National Convention in Minneapolis is happening against
the backdrop of police raids and outright fascist tactics towards
protesters and bystancers over the last 5 days. Over the weekend, FBI,
Secret Service and Minneapolis police raided a houses that were being
used in planning for upcoming permitted activities for the RNC.
At least 5 private homes were ransacked, with nothing stolen, in an
attempt to intimidate protest organizers. The Ramsey County Police
Department raided the home of residents, as well as other locations
around the city, see youtube below. They broke through the doors and held
people, including children at gunpoint.
Monday, about 10,000 marched against the war in a permitted protest,
which, like those in Denver, took months of court battles to gain.
Tuesday the musicians from Rage Against the Machine were set to play at
the permitted rally space at the state captiol, but police refused to
let them set up. Riot police were moving in as the permit was to run
out at 7:00 pm. |

In the months leading up to the Republican
National Convention, the FBI-led Minneapolis Joint Terrorist Task Force
actively recruited people to infiltrate vegan groups and other leftist
organizations and report back about their activities. On May 21, the
Minneapolis City Pages ran a recruiting story called "Moles Wanted."
Law enforcement sought to pre-empt lawful protest against the policies
of the Bush administration during the convention.
Since Friday, local police and sheriffs,
working with the FBI, conducted pre-emptive searches, seizures and arrests.
Glenn Greenwald described the targeting of protesters by "teams
of 25-30 officers in riot gear, with semi-automatic weapons drawn, entering
homes of those suspected of planning protests, handcuffing and forcing
them to lay on the floor, while law enforcement officers searched the
homes, seizing computers, journals, and political pamphlets." Journalists
were detained at gunpoint and lawyers representing detainees were handcuffed
at the scene. |

The good news is that nearly two million
people were evacuated and spared the direct hit of Gustav on the Gulf
Coast. Our sisters and brothers in Haiti and the Dominican Republic,
who were not able to leave the point of the storm, lost over 100 lives.
The people of the US were fortunate to be able to leave.
The bad news is that most people have
not been allowed to return. |

As of this writing some pundits are saying that John McCain’s pick for
VP, Gov. Sarah Palin of Alaska, may not or should not remain on the
ticket, so frightening is the possibility of her being one heartbeat
(or cancer attack) away from the presidency. As a flood of negative
columns have appeared on numerous Internet sources, and even in
mainstream media, the question is being asked: Did McCain shoot from
the hip in this selection? Did his team not adequately vet her? Or
did he just want a right wing Christian WOMAN to win over the religious
crazies as well as to try to get some of Hillary Clinton’s backers.
One blogger, Ruth Rosen on AlterNet, said, “How stupid does he think we
are? |

A Country at Peace...A country "at peace with being at
war" is a country of "Good Germans."
Seven
years of the Bush Regime have radically altered the shape of U.S. society
and locked in a global trajectory of wars for empire with no regard for human
cost or conscience.
The world
is shocked by the crimes and destruction the American people have allowed to be
carried out in our names. read more
Latest OutrageU.N. States U.S. Responsible for 90 Civilian DeathsThe U.N. is now saying it indeed has evidence that the U.S. murdered 90 civilians, the vast majority of them children. The U.N. Special Envoy to Afghanistan, Kai Eide, said: "Investigations by UNAMA (United Nations Assistance Mission in Afghanistan) found convincing evidence, based on the testimony of eyewitnesses, and others, that some 90 civilians were killed, including 60 children, 15 women and 15 men." " Outrage" doesn't even begin to describe this-- this is indisputably a war crime. And again, this is the war that Obama and Biden would to expand... News source
